Softball Team Sweeps LMU

ANDERSON, S.C. -- With two outs and a tie at 9 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game, Anderson University's Brittany Gary blasted a walk-off home run down the left field line for a 11-9 come-from-behind victory over Lincoln Memorial Friday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the second game, Ashley Rogers allowed just one hit to lead Anderson to a 3-1 victory. Trailing 9-1 after the top half of the fifth inning and facing the eight-run rule, the Lady Trojans pushed across five runs with a two-run home run by Meredith Knox and a three-run homer by Allison Cromer. The Lady Trojans had three singles in a row and with two outs in the inning and runners on second and third, Kayla Williams hit a single to tie the game at nine. The Lady Trojans were led offensively by Knox, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and by Cromer, who was 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. The two teams combined for seven home runs in the first game. In the second game, Rogers allowed just one hit and had nine strikeouts in seven innings. Anderson started the scoring in the third inning with double off the bat of Rogers. Knox drove in Rogers and Melissa Carmichael, who had reached on an error, to give the Lady Trojans a 2-0 lead. The lone hit for Lincoln Memorial was a home run off the bat of Cassey Shutte in the fifth inning making the score 2-1 Anderson. The Lady Trojans pushed one more run across in the fifth on a double by Williams with two outs scoring Ellen Steele. In game two the Lady Trojans out hit Lincoln Memorial, 5-1. "It is always nice to win two in the home opener," said Head Coach Tommy Hewitt.
