Softball Team Sweeps Montreat

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Ellen Steele led Anderson University to a doubleheader sweep of Montreat College Monday night at Smethers field. In the first game, Ashley Rogers threw a complete game allowing five hits and recording nine strikeouts in 5-2 victory. Steele, who was 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, accounted for all of Anderson's runs in the Lady Trojans' 5-4 victory in the second game. Rogers allowed one unearned run in the sixth inning of game one and recorded the final out on a strike out with the bases loaded. The Lady Trojans were led offensively in the first game by Steele, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and by Kayla Williams, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI. The Lady Trojans scored three runs in the first inning of game two on three consecutive singles by Meredith Knox, Steele, and Williams. Montreat scored one run in the top of the second, but the run was eased on a solo home run by Steele in the bottom of the third. In the top of the seventh, Montreat scored three unearned runs to cut the Anderson lead to 5-4. With two outs and the tying run at third, starting pitcher Stephanie Griffis knocked down a line drive and threw to first base to end the game. Griffis allowed only three hits and one earned run. Anderson is now 7-5 overall. The Lady Trojans will play at Southern Wesleyan Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Anderson University Softball Season Statistics
