Softball Team Rolls Over Abbey

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Kayla Williams and Stephanie Griffis drove in three runs apiece to lead Anderson University to a 9-4 victory over Belmont Abbey in the second game and a sweep of a CVAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Brittany Gary had a two-run single in the third and Kayla Thrasher had a two-run double in the fourth to lead Anderson to a 5-2 victory. Anderson, 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the CVAC, has won seven straight and 12 of its last 13. In the first game, Anderson took a 1-0 lead in the second on a run-scoring double by Meredith Knox. The big hits by Gary and Thrasher increased Anderson's lead to 5-0 through four innings. Ashley Rogers allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, in six innings to pick up the victory. In the second game, Knox doubled and scored in the first and then hit a two-run homer in the second to give Anderson a 3-2 lead. After Belmont Abbey tied the game in the third on a solo home run by Angie Sowell, Anderson took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Stephanie Griffis. Anderson added three more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to seize a 9-3 lead. Griffis had a two-run double in the fourth and Williams had a two-run single in the fifth.
