USC Upstate Sweeps AU In Softball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Vanesa Flores, playing her first games as a USC Upstate Spartan, connected on two home runs and collected four RBIs and Heidi Gibbs was a perfect 6-for-6 on the day to lead Upstate to a doubleheader sweep of Anderson University Wednesday at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans won the first game, 8-0 and the second game, 12-4. Both games were called due to the eight-run rule. Upstate, which is moving to Division I after this season, improves to 2-0 on the year, while Anderson falls to 0-2. Flores hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning as Upstate opened a 3-0 lead. The Spartans added to the lead in the second. Shay Slater led off the inning with a triple and scored on Gibbs' single through the right side. Upstate increased the lead to 6-0 in the third inning Slater drove in Baillie Denson on a sacrifice fly. Gibbs then hit a two-run homer. Upstate put an end to the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Gibbs singled with the bases loaded to drive in Denson from third and Slater scored when Jamie Amerine drew a bases loaded walk. Emily Jeffery (1-0) had a strong debut in the circle for Upstate. The freshman threw a complete game, finishing with eight strikeouts while giving up just two hits and one walk. Stephanie Griffis (0-1) took the loss for Anderson. Gibbs finished the first game 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Denson was also 3-for-3 with a pair of runs. In the second game, Anderson started hot. Kayla Thrasher hit a two-run home run to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. Upstate answered when Slater singled to drive in a pair of runs and scored on Tiffany Pitcher's squeeze bunt to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead. Anderson fought back with two runs in the top of the second when Merddith Knox drove in a run on a single and Kasey King scored on Ellen Steele's sacrifice fly. The score remained 4-3 through the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Amber Patterson's double drove in pinch runner Melissa Lockey and Patterson scored on Gibb's RBI single. Upstate ended the second game with seven runs in the fifth inning. Flores homered to lead off the inning and Stacey Kizer followed with a two-run shot to give Upstate a 7-3 lead. Gibbs doubled to left to drive in Denson and Katie Adams picked up a pair of RBIs on a single up the middle to plate Gibbs and Patterson. Pitcher's second squeeze bunt of the day brought in Adams to end the game. Gibbs finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Adams and Slater each had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Jessica Jolly (1-0) tossed 3.1 innings of relief to pick up the win for Upstate. The senior allowed no hits and struck out two in the win. Ashley Rogers (0-1) took the loss for Anderson. Anderson will play host to Lincoln Memorial Friday at 4 p.m.
