Softball Team Splits With Fleet

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Ashley Rogers pitched a three-hitter to lead Anderson University to a 3-2 victory in the first game against Erskine in a CVAC doubleheader at Smethers Field Thursday afternoon. In the second game, Katie Knapp hit three home runs, including the game winner in the eighth inning, to give the Flying Fleet a 5-4 victory. With the split, Anderson has officially won the Beville Cup Sponsored by ARAMARK with the largest final points in the four-year history of the competition. Anderson is 23-12 overall and 12-6 in the CVAC, and Erskine is now 15-27-4 overall and 4-9 in the CVAC. In game one, Erskine scored two runs in the first inning on a three-run triple by Ashlee LaFontaine, but Rogers settled down and allowed just one hit in the next six innings. Kayla Thrasher's RBI double got Anderson on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to make it a 2-1 game. Allison Cromer's solo home run to right tied the game at 2 in the second, and in the third, Meredith Knox scored when Kayla Thrasher reached on an error for what proved to be the game winning run. Cromer led the Lady Trojans offensively by going 1-for-2 with an RBI. Lafontaine led the Flying Fleet by going 1-for-3 with two RBI. In game two, the Fleet again got on the scoreboard in the first inning with one run on two hits. Knapp delivered her first home run -- a solo blast to left -- in the third inning to make it 2-0. The Trojans responded in the fifth with three unearned runs on three hits highlighted by a two-run double to left center by Kayla Williams. But Knapp would deliver again for the Flying Fleet to tie the game at 3 with another solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. In the eighth inning with the international tie rule in effect, Knapp hit her third home run just over the center field fence to make it 5-3. Anderson scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the rally ended with the tying run at first base. Anderson University Softball Season Statistics
