Track and Field Readies for Conference Championships

ANDERSON, S.C. - On the heels of impressive outings last weekend in the Bluegrass State, the Anderson University men's and women's track and field teams are slated to compete in the two-day South Atlantic Conference championships, to be hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C.

The Trojan women claimed third at the inaugural SAC Championships last season, with Savanna Keese finishing second in the hammer throw, while D'Yandra Morris brought home sixth. Jill Baxter claimed 15th in the long jump and finished in a four-way tie for third in the high jump. Baxter also finished eighth in the javelin throw, with Keese claiming 20th. Grace Gerlock earned fifth in the 10,000 meter run.

Sherin Malone set a new school record with a first-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles, while claiming 10th place in the shot put. Morris took first place in the shot put, while Keese claimed seventh in the discus throw. Bari Robinson captured first place in the 800 meter run and fifth in the 1500 meter run, with Sydney Hazel crossing the line in fourth in the 1500 meter run.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Malone, Baxter, then-senior Madison Guest and Lauren Averitt captured fifth, while Hazel, Baxter, Robinson and Guest finished fifth in the 4x400 meter relay. Olivia Gardner, Gerlock, Mia Swiersz and Amber Worthy claimed fourth, seventh, ninth and 14th, respectively, in the women's 5000 meter run.

The men's squad finished sixth at the conference championships last season, with Eric Hoover bringing home 20th in the javelin throw. Philip DeGraaf took first place in the pole vault, while Hoover captured 11th in the discus throw and 11th in the triple jump. Joshua Visi-Clark placed fourth in the 800 meters, while Ben Boerma and Ned Kennedy finished 12th and 14th, respectively in the 5000 meter run, while Michael Burch was 19th. The 4x400 combination of Visi-Clark, Jonathan Shorter and Jesse Patrick claimed seventh.

Freshman Christopher Burton is the reigning conference men's outdoor track Runner of the Week, after helping the Anderson men's 4x100 meter relay team set a new school record at last weekend's University of the Cumberlands Invitational in Williamsburg, Ky. Burton went on to set another individual school record in the 100 meter dash, while helping the men's 4x400 meter relay team finish fifth in a time of 3:27.43. The native of Johnston, S.C. also claimed sixth in the triple jump.

Freshman Mason Hazel won the men's 1500 meter run, while the freshman quartet of T.J. Robinson, Caleb Stephenson, Joseph Siegwald and Burton set the new school record in the men's 4x100 meter relay. Newcomer Brelyn Alston-Barclay posted a school record in the high jump in his collegiate debut.

On the women's side, Gerlock finished as runner-up in the women's 5000 meter run, while Sydney Hazel and Robinson posted back-to-back finishes in second and third place in the 800 meter run, with freshman Alex Dixon claiming 16th in a time of 2:28.81. Junior Brooklyn Watkins earned second place in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.51 meters.

Malone claimed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles and garnered second place in the 400 meter hurdles.
