School Records Fall at ETSU’s Buccaneer Invitational

ANDERSON, S.C. - Led by freshman Christopher Burton's two school-record setting performances, the Anderson University men's and women's track and field teams posted notable outings on day one of the Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational, hosted by East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn.

Burton qualified for the semifinals of the men's 60 meter dash with a seventh-place finish in a time of 7.03 in the preliminaries, while fellow freshmen Caleb Stephenson (7.12) and T.J Robinson (7.22) finished 24th and 37th, respectively. Burton then set a new school record with a 15th-place finish in a time of 6.98 seconds in the semifinals inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center.

Burton followed up by posting his second school record of the day by capturing ninth place in the 200 meter dash preliminaries in a time of 22.18 seconds.

Stephenson brought home 35th place in the men's 400 meter dash prelims with a school-record time of 51.44 seconds, with freshman Rashod Monts placing 49th in a time of 52.24 seconds.

Sophomore Jonathan Shorter finished 38th in the 60 meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 10.01. Freshman Mason Hazel took eighth place in the finals of the 5000 meter run in a time of 15:18.64, while sophomores Ben Boerma (15:22.60) and Ned Kennedy (15:56.51) captured 11th and 32nd, respectively.

Freshman Anthony Aleruchi garnered 33rd in the weight throw with a toss of 11.51 meters, while Burton finished 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 13.64 meters. Sophomore Eric Hoover placed 21st in the triple jump with a distance of 12.13 meters.

After reaching the semifinals, sophomore standout Sherin Malone qualified for Saturday's finals in the women's 60 meter hurdles with a sixth-place finish in a school-record time of 8.97 seconds.

Sophomore Olivia Gardner captured fourth place in the finals of the 5000 meter run in a time of 18:22.46, with sophomores Mia Swierzs (19:46.53) and Grace Gerlock (19:47.30) finishing 28th and 29th, respectively. Sophomore Amber Worthy placed 38th in a time of 20:15.91.

The finals of the women's weight throw saw senior Savanna Keese finish 13th with a toss of 14.65 meters, while D'Yandra Morris finished 22nd with a distance of 13.24 meters.

The group of senior Sydney Hazel, Malone, Bari Robinson and Alex Dixon brought home sixth place in the finals of the women's distance medley in a time of 12:52.35.

Saturday's running events are slated to start at 9 a.m. with the heptathlon's 60 meter hurdles, while the field events get underway at 9:45 a.m. with the heptathlon's pole vault.
