Track and Field Wraps up Day One of Emory Classic

ATLANTA - Redshirt junior Brooklyn Watkins won the javelin throw to pace the Anderson University men's and women's track and field teams' efforts on Friday's opening day of the Emory Classic.

Watkins' toss of 38.47 meters was more than a meter further than the nearest competitor in the event, while sophomore Sherin Malone placed sixth in the women's 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:09.90, with teammate Ali Caldwell finishing eighth in a time of 1:13.02.

Sophomore Olivia Gardner (12:15.56) and freshman Alex Dixon (12:25.53) claimed seventh and eighth, respectively in the 3000 meter steeplechase, while senior Savanna Keese claimed ninth in the hammer throw with a distance of 41.18 meters. Junior D'Yandra Morris claimed 15th with a toss of 36.23 meters.

On the men's side, sophomore Eric Hoover took home second place in the javelin throw with a distance of 40.61 meters, with teammate Philip DeGraaf claiming third with a distance of 39.02 meters.

Sophomore Jesse Patrick crossed the line in a time of 10:27.91 to finish ninth in the 3000 meter steeplechase, with freshman Christopher Burton claiming 11th in the finals of the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters.

Sophomore Jonathan Shorter captured 13th in the finals of the men's 400 meter hurdles in a time of 59.21 and freshman Joseph Siegwald tied for 28th in the finals of the long jump with a distance of 5.47 meters.

Saturday's events are slated to get underway at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 100 meter trials and the men's discus.
