BELMONT, N.C. -- Jonathan Jackson scored 23 points to lead Belmont Abbey to a 73-61 victory over Anderson University in a Conference Carolinas game Wednesday night. Jackson scored 11 of his 14 points at the free throw line. The Crusaders, 15-9 overall and 13-4 in the conference, got just one point off of their bench. Jackson was followed by Deonte Murphy with 15 points, and Richard Barbee and Ric Marczenko with 13 points apiece. Marczenko also had a game-high 12 rebounds. "Jackson is their go-to guy and he got a lot of his points at the free throw line," said Anderson head coach Jason Taylor. "We worked a lot on staying vertical and not leaving our feet on defense, but he still got to the line." Anderson, 10-13 and 8-8, was led by Brandon Young with 16 points, Jarret Johnson with 12, and Kevis Cornwell with 11. Young, a freshman from Belmont, N.C., has scored in double figures in 22 of 23 games. Belmont Abbey took the lead at the 16:46 mark of the first half and built a 36-22 halftime lead. Anderson got within eight points twice in the first four minutes of the second half but could get no closer. Two 3-point baskets by Donte Murphy midway through the second half ended Anderson's last serious comeback attempt. "Murphy made two NBA threes with the shot clock running down," Taylor said. "You just have to tip your hat to him. Those were two big baskets." Belmont Abbey was 26-for-36 from the line, while Anderson was 10-for-16. "They shot 20 more free throws than we did," Taylor said. "I honestly don't think we could have driven it into the lane more. We just missed so many layups." Led by Marczenko and Cad Patus, who had 11 rebounds, the Crusaders won the boards, 49-36. "They're a very good team," Taylor said. "I hope we can fight our way through the last four games and come back here for the tournament. We've got to play good for that to happen."
