SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a two-week layoff and a fourth-place finish at the Barton Invitational, the Anderson women's golf team is in eighth place following the first round of the Converse Spring Invitational, hosted by the Valkyries Monday at the par-72, 5,881-yard Carolina Country Club layout.
King leads the 19-team field by one stroke over Lincoln Memorial, with Converse "A" two shots further back in third. Lenoir-Rhyne is fourth after Monday's first round, while Coker and Tusculum are tied for fifth. North Carolina A&T is seventh, with the Trojans in eighth, four strokes in front of Carson-Newman. Erskine is 10th, while Barton and Trevecca Nazarene share the 11th slot.
Catawba and Converse "B" are tied for 13th, while Belmont Abbey and Pfeiffer share the 15th spot. Emmanuel, Chowan and Montreat round out the field.
Converse's Marley Felthousen leads the chase for individual medalist honors after carding a 1-ove-par 73, while a trio of golfers sit two strokes further back. King's Daphne Chang, LMU's Reagan Greene and Trevecca Nazarene's Alexa Rippy all share the second spot heading into Tuesday's final round.
Anderson sophomore Tiffany Elam, freshman Kate Hill and sophomore Makalyn Poole, who finished seventh here a year ago and help lead the Trojans to the team title, all carded 6-over-par 78s and are tied for 10th.
Sophomore Blake Hodges and junior Riley Lovorn each posted first-round 18-over-par 90s and are tied for 74th.
The two-day event is slated to conclude on Tuesday.
