ANDERSON, S.C. – Paced by sophomore Tiffany Elam and junior Riley Lovorn's 5-over-par 77s, the Anderson University women's golf team is in third place after day one of the AU Invitational, hosted by the Trojans Monday at the par-72, 5,940-yard Cobb's Glen layout.
Fellow South Atlantic Conference-member Queens University of Charlotte (312) leads the two-day event by two shots over Lincoln Memorial (314), with the Trojans (316) standing just a pair of strokes further back in third place. Erskine carded an overall 323 as a team and is in fourth place, 10 shots better than Converse (333), which occupies the fifth spot.
Catawba (343), Emmanuel (344), Spartanburg Methodist (352) and North Greenville (360) rounded out the nine-team field.
Queens' Natalie Pleyerova fired an even-par 72 on the day and holds a three-shot lead over Erskine's Stephanie Landreth, who carded a 3-over-par 75. Four players are five shots off the pace, including Elam and Lovorn.
Elam led the field with four birdies during the opening round, with Lovorn and sophomore Makalyn Poole each posting a pair of birdies. Lovorn reached par on 11 holes, with Elam carding nine pars on the day. Following a first-round 78, Poole is tied for seventh, with junior Morgan Webb holding the 14th spot after firing an 81 on Monday.
AU freshman Kate Hill posted a 12-over-par 84 and shares the 24th spot, while sophomore Samantha Ellison fired an 89 and is tied for 32nd place entering Tuesday's final round. Sophomore Blake Hodges rounded out the Trojan contingent with a 93 and is in 42nd place.
