Trojans Rally Late To Earn Split With Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. - Anderson College rallied to score three runs in the sixth inning and Nick Wates picked up 11th save of the season as the Trojans pulled out a 7-6 victory over Erskine in the second game and a split of a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. In the first game, Erskine's John Merrell outdueled Anderson's Donnie Fetner to lead the Flying Fleet to a 1-0 victory. With the split, Anderson is now 29-14 overall and 14-7 in the CVAC, while Erskine is now 28-17, 7-13. In the second game, Anderson scored six runs with two outs, five by hits and one by error. The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead through four innings. Anderson scored two runs in the first on singles by Caleb Owen and Jared Taylor, an error, and a two-out RBI single by Donavon Schmidt. AC added a single run in the third on a single and stolen base by Ratliff and a two-out double by Schmidt. Seth Thompson increased AC's lead to 4-0 in the fourth when he singled, moved to second on a ground out, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an error. The Fleet bounced back in the fifth with six runs to take a 6-4 lead. Erskine had four singles and AC had two errors in the inning. Down two runs, Anderson got off the deck in the sixth. With one out, Thompson doubled. After the second out, Owen singled to score Thompson, then stole second. Taylor brought Owen home with the tying run with a single and moved to second on an outfield error. Ratliff then delivered a single for the game winner. In the first game, Merrell and Fetner locked up in a pitcher's duel. Fetner had a no hitter through 5 2/3 innings. But with two outs in the sixth, Alex Lewis singled and then scored on a double by Adam Twitty for the only run of the game. Merrell struck out four, walked two, and allowed just one hit - a single by Jason Jones in the second inning. Fetner struck out two, walked one, and allowed just two hits. Anderson is at Augusta State on Sunday, and then will return to Due West on Monday to play the Fleet again. Because of CVAC rainout policy, Monday's game will not count in the conference standings.
