Anderson Rallies To Beat Error-Prone North Georgia

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson College spotted North Georgia a 7-0 through three innings then rallied to take an 11-7 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson, 7-1 overall, sent 13 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and scored eight runs to complete the comeback. Because both teams were preparing for conference play this weekend, a total of 16 pitchers appeared in the game, eight by each side. North Georgia, 4-14, collected 16 hits but also committed eight errors, including five in the decisive eighth inning. Anderson used the errors, five walks, and three hit batters to fuel its comeback. In the first three innings, the visiting Saints had 11 hits and scored seven runs. They opened the second inning with five consecutive singles. North Georgia leadoff batter David Loder was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the first three innings. But after scoring three runs after two outs in the third, the Saints did not score again and managed just five hits in the last three innings. Anderson scored two runs in the fourth then got another run closer in the fifth when Jason Ratliff reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a single by Jason Jones. The Trojans, who have won five straight, denied the Saints a run in the sixth when centerfielder Jared Taylor cut down Steven King at the plate for the third out. Trailing 7-3 in the eighth, the Trojans put together their winning rally. Donavon Schmidt opened the inning with a single, and F.A. Vildosola walked to put runners at first and second. Schmidt scored on an infield single by Seth Thompson. Vildosola moved to third and Thompson moved to second when third baseman Matt Terry committed a throwing error trying to get Thompson at first. Vildosola and Thompson both scored to cut the North Georgia lead to 7-6 when Al Phillips reached on a throwing error by Loder. After Jeremy McCauley reached on a dropped third strike and a throwing error by King, Jared Taylor bunted to put runners at second and third. After Joe Whitham walked to load the bases, Ratliff reached on an error by shortstop Casey Sanders to score Phillips and tie the game at 7. A fielder's choice and a ground out gave Anderson a 9-7 lead then Thompson brought home two more runs with a single to center. Thompson and Schmidt had two hits apiece for the Trojans. Adam Dymond, who pitched a perfect eighth, earned the victory. Anderson's final five pitchers -- Brad Brock, John Dembroski, Nate Miller, Brett Youngblood, Dymond, and Nick Wates -- allowed just five hits, struck out three, and walked none. Anderson opens play in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference this weekend at home against Belmont Abbey. Box Score
