First Place!: Sweep Moves AC Into Top Spot

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Senior closer Nick Wates recorded his 10th save and sixth victory of the season to lead Anderson College to a sweep of a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference doubleheader against Pfeiffer Sunday afternoon. The sweep moves the Trojans, 28-13 overall and 13-6 in the conference, into first place in the CVAC standings one-half game ahead of Mount Olive with just two series remaining. In the first game, Brett Youngblood allowed just six hits and Wates pitched a perfect seventh to give the Trojans a 2-1 victory. In the second game, Anderson had three two-out hits to score runs on its way to a 7-6 victory in 10 innings. Anderson got all the runs it would need in the first game in the second inning. F.A. Vildosola reached on an error and scored on a double by Whitham. Whitham scored the second run on a throwing error. Youngblood allowed a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first then limited the Falcons to just five more hits before turning the game over to Wates, who recorded his 10th save of the season and his second of the series. In the second game, the Trojans fell behind 5-2 through three innings before rallying to complete the sweep. In the fourth inning, Jeremy McCauley had a two-out, two-run single to cut the Pfeiffer lead to 5-4. AC took a 6-5 lead in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by Jared Taylor. After both teams were scoreless in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, Anderson managed to push across the winning run in the 10th. With one out, Vildosola doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Justin Sterling, who scored on a two-out single by Seth Thompson. Wates, 6-1, pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in the second game to earn the victory. He allowed three hits, struck out five, and issued one intentional walk.
