Indians Snap Losing Streak Against AC

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Five extra base hits, including a pair of home runs, highlighted Newberry College's 11-7 win over Anderson College Wednesday night at Kirkland Field. The win, Newberry's first in its last seven outings, improves the Indians to 21-26. The loss was Anderson's fourth in its last six outings and drops the Trojans to 30-17 overall. Both teams scored early and often in the slugfest. Anderson scored a pair of runs in the first, one unearned on the first of four Newberry errors, as shortstop Jared Taylor and second baseman Donavon Schmidt both had RBI singles in their first at-bats. Newberry plated a run in the bottom half of the first with three two-out singles, including an RBI base hit by designated hitter Stuart Kay. The Trojans put up three more runs in the second, two on a triple by left fielder Caleb Owen. Owen scored the third run of the inning on Taylor's second hit and RBI of the contest to make the score 5-1. Newberry answered in a big way, putting up six runs in the second inning. Third baseman Wade Roof started things off with a one-out double to left field. Following a walk, left fielder Gilmore Stevens hit his second of three infield singles to load the bases. Second baseman Gene Dotson drove home Roof with an RBI single to leave the bases loaded for center fielder Carlos Gonzalez, who ripped a pitch to left center for his fourth homer and first career grand slam to grab a 6-5 lead. Dustin Smith walked and scored the final run of the inning on a double to the center field fence by shortstop Billy Alm. Gonzalez' slam was the second one against Anderson this week. Kennesaw State's Scott Conway hit a grand slam against the Trojans on Tuesday night. Newberry added another run in the third when Stevens hit a two-out infield single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Dotson drove home his second run of the day with a single to right to make it 8-5 Newberry. Both teams scored a run in the fourth, but in very different ways. Anderson scored its run in the inning when Owen drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third and came home on a balk by reliever Jared Locke. Newberry's run came off the bat of Travis Moore, who blasted his fifth homer of the season, a solo bomb to right field to give Newberry a 9-6 lead. Both teams traded runs in the sixth and Newberry put up the final score of the game in the seventh when Stevens scored his third run of the day on Smith's fourth hit of the game, an RBI double to right field. Smith was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Anderson starter Brian Devereaux took the loss for his first collegiate decision (0-1). He allowed eight hits and a walk and gave up six earned runs in an inning and a third. Locke also got his first collegiate decision with a win in relief. He lasted 4 1/3 innings, scattering five hits and a walk, and allowing two runs (only one earned) in his longest relief appearance of the season. Anderson takes on Mt. Olive College for a Friday doubleheader at noon and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. for a series that will decide the CVAC regular-season championship.
