Anderson Goes For Title Against Long-Time Nemesis

ANDERSON, S.C. - In the next two days, the Anderson College baseball team will try and make history. The Trojans, 30-17 overall and 14-7 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference, enter the final three-game conference series against Mount Olive needing just one victory and a little help to win their first-ever CVAC regular-season title. "I'm really proud of the guys," said Anderson head coach Joe Miller. "This has been a great season for us, but we still have a lot of work to do. We've had a tough week with three road games in three days, but I'm sure we'll be ready to go on Friday." The AC-Mount Olive series begins at noon Friday at Anderson Memorial Stadium with a doubleheader and will conclude with a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. Anderson can wrap up the regular-season title with two victories against Mount Olive, 27-19 overall and 14-9 in the CVAC, and one loss by Barton (11-7 CVAC), which plays at Longwood Friday and Saturday. If Anderson wins just one game from Mount Olive and Barton sweeps Longwood, Barton will win the regular-season title on percentage points -- .667 to .625. If Anderson beats Mount Olive twice and Barton sweeps Longwood, Anderson and Barton will tie for the regular-season title at .667. Anderson will try and lock up the CVAC title against the one league team that has had AC's number. Since 1999, Mount Olive is 10-1 against Anderson and has won eight straight games against Anderson. Anderson's lone victory came in 1999 and ended Mount Olive's 25-game winning regular-season streak. In the last four seasons, Mount Olive has outscored Anderson, 106-51. But the three games at Mount Olive last season all were close - 8-3, 5-1, 4-2. This has been a historic season for the Anderson program. The Trojans have been ranked both nationally and in the South Atlantic Region for the first time ever. Offensively, Anderson is led by junior outfielder Jason Ratliff (.404, 13 doubles, 37 RBI), junior outfielder/infielder Jared Taylor (.388, 5 triples, 32 RBI), junior designated hitter/catcher Jason Jones (.278, 41 RBI), and sophomore Donavon Schmidt (.324, 7 home runs). Anderson's top two starting pitchers are senior Donnie Fetner (4-3, 3.99) and sophomore Brett Youngblood (5-1, 5.50). In the bullpen, Anderson has one of the best closers in Division II in senior Nick Wates (6-1, 11 saves, 2.37). Mount Olive is led by Brad Church, the CVAC's leading hitter (.422, 22 doubles), and Stevie Parrish, who is fourth in the CVAC in RBI with 50.
