Mantle Scores In 10th To Beat Anderson

CENTRAL, S.C. - Stan Mantle scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Southern Wesleyan a 4-3 victory over Anderson College in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon. Anderson, 24-13 overall, tied the game at 4 with a two-run seventh. Singles by Jared Taylor, Jason Ratliff, and Jason Jones plated the first run, and Ratliff scored the second run on a throwing error. The Trojans had runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth but could not take the lead. Mantle led off the Southern Wesleyan 10th with a walk. Hayward Burns bunted to move Mantle to second, but he reached when Anderson tried and failed to cut down Mantle at second. After a botched pickoff play moved Mantle to third and Burns to second, Mantle scored on a wild pitch. Nick Wates, 5-1, was the loser for Anderson even though he did not give up a hit in 1 2/3 innings. Wates struck out four and walked two. There was just one extra base hit in the game, and both teams finished with just six hits apiece. Anderson will play host to Emmanuel at 6 p.m. Thursday before journeying to Pfeiffer on Saturday for a big CVAC series against the Falcons.
