ANDERSON, S.C. - In a break from the typical spring tournament format, the Anderson University and Erskine College men's and women's golf teams will play a two-day dual tournament Thursday and Friday.
The Flying Fleet will host the first round of the matchup on Thursday at Hunter's Creek Golf and Country Club in Greenwood, S.C., the Trojans will play host to their rivals on Friday at Cobb's Glen in Anderson.
On the women's side, the former conference foes both competed in the Dana Rader Intercollegiate on March 7-8, with Anderson carding a 668 to claim fourth, while the Fleet were eighth with a two-day total 728.
The two men's squads have not competed in any of the same tournaments in 2011.
The two-day head-to-head competition will count toward the
annual Beville Cup competition, which was established in 2003 in
order to promote and enhance the rivalry between Anderson and
Erskine and is sponsored by ARAMARK. The winner of the Beville Cup
each year has the award presented each spring to its
student-athletes and coaches by the losing athletics director,
traditionally at their postseason banquet/awards night.
Last season AU brought the Cup back to the Electric City, with
Anderson claiming a 20-18 victory after the AU women's golf team
posted a fourth-place finish at the Conference Carolinas'
Championship, two spots ahead of Erskine to provide the winning
margin.
Anderson won the inaugural Cup in 2004 by a comfortable margin
before Erskine captured the Cup back-to-back years in 2005 and
2006. The Cup returned to Anderson in 2007 and 2008, but Erskine
returned it to Due West in 2009 with a narrow 16.5-15.5 win.
