ANDERSON, S.C. - Coker senior forward Carlos Recinos' goal in the 74th minute snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the visiting Cobras to a 2-1 win past Anderson Wednesday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
Anderson suffered its third consecutive setback and slipped to 0-4-1, while losing its third contest of the season by a one-goal margin. Coker evened its mark at 2-2 by snapping a two-game skid.
Coker utilized its quickness to control the tempo early in the contest and the Cobras took a 1-0 lead at the 13:43 mark on a goal by junior Kevin Arellana, as the midfielder worked open and his only shot of the afternoon found the back of the net.
The Trojans' offense came alive in the 29th minute, with senior Shu Ogawa recording AU's first shot of the contest - missing just wide to the left.
Anderson followed with a flurry of four more attempts over the
next 16 minutes, with sophomore Lars Zimmerman scoring his first
goal of the season off a corner kick from freshman Travis Henry
with less than four seconds remaining in the first half to even the
score at 1-1 at the break.
Sophomore Tapiwa Munetsi nearly gave the Trojans the lead in the
72nd minute, but his shot caromed off the crossbar, while Recinos
notched the game-winner at the 73:20 mark, one-timing a cross from
sophomore Fernando Bedoya from short range into the AU net to set
the final margin.
Zimmerman made one final bid to send the contest into extra time but Coker goalie James Sweeney made the stop and preserved the win.
The Trojans held an 11-8 edge in shots, while shots on goal were
even at five apiece. AU also claimed a 4-3 advantage in corner
kicks.
Trojan net-minder Lukas Hesse went the distance in goal, collecting
three saves and suffering the loss, while Sweeney notched four
saves and picked up the victory.
Anderson opens league play by visiting Catawba on Friday with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Frock Field.
