Solo Homer, Relief Pitching Lead Catawba Past AC

ANDERSON, S.C. - Thomas Giles hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and four Catawba relief pitchers allowed just one hit in the final 3 2/3 innings to lead the Indians to a 6-4 non-conference victory over Anderson College Monday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Catawba, 33-17 overall, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. A two-run triple by Jimbo Davis and a run-scoring single by Matt Baker were the big hits in the inning. Anderson, 20-32, tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the second inning with a four spot of its own. All four runs in the inning were unearned. After an infield error kept the inning alive and allowed Jonathan Pitts, who had reached on a double, to score, Jeremy McCauley and Seth Thompson had back-to-back singles. Thompson's single scored Jessie Whiteside, who reached on the error that fueled the inning. A walk by Caleb Owen loaded the bases for Jacob Reid, who delivered a two-run single to tie the game at 4. After Gile's blast gave the Indians a 5-4 lead, Catawba added an insurance run in the seventh. Nick Lefko was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single by Matt Smith. Anderson got just one runner to second base in the final seven innings against four Catawba relievers - Tim Smith, Brian Benton, Matt Seabolt, and Zach Evans. Benton and Seabolt combined to strike out the side in the eighth, and Evans came on to strike out the side in the ninth. Catawba had 10 hits to Anderson's eight.
