Anderson, Belmont Abbey Split Doubleheader

ANDERSON, S.C. - Michael Raymond and Zach Kappler combined to pitch a four-hitter to lead Belmont Abbey to a 3-2 victory over Anderson College in the second game of a CVAC doubleheader Saturday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In the first game, Desmond Robson pitched a complete game and Jessie Whiteside hit a grand slam home run to lead Anderson to a 6-2 victory. The split keeps Belmont Abbey, 24-25 overall and 7-13 in the CVAC, one-half game in front of Anderson, 18-27 and 6-13, in the race for the eighth and final spot in the CVAC Tournament at Wilson, N.C., in two weeks. Raymond pitched the first six innings and allowed all four hits. He struck out six, walked four and allowed just one earned run to pick up the victory. Kappler pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn a save. Anderson's Brett Youngblood was a hard-luck loser. Youngblood, a senior from Travelers Rest, scattered 11 hits in seven innings and struck out three. The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Patrick Atwell and a triple by Alex Udwari. After Owen threw out Chris Brake at the plate to end the sixth, Anderson got a single run in the sixth on a lead-off double by Pitts and two ground outs. After a sacrifice by Cody Nye, Jeremy McCauley received an intentional walk to bring Whiteside, a sophomore from Beaufort, to the plate. Whiteside's homer, his fourth of the season, over the left field fence gave Anderson a 6-1 lead. The Trojans scored single unearned runs in the first and second for a 2-0 lead. In the first, Owen singled and moved to second on an error, moved to third on a balk, and scored on a ground out. In the second with one out, Neville reached on an error but erased when he tried to advance to third on a single by Nye. Nye advanced to second on the throw and scored on a single by Jeremy McCauley.
