Barton Damages AC's CVAC Tourney Hopes

WILSON, N.C. -- Barton College scored three runs in the third inning and held on for a 4-2 victory in the second game and a sweep of Anderson College Saturday afternoon. The sweep drops Anderson to 20-30 overall and 7-14 in the CVAC and does severe damage to AC's hopes of making next weekend's CVAC Tournament at Wilson, N.C. In the first game, Barton (20-26, 10-13) got five RBI from Eric McInerny and Brook Goodwin went 3-for-4 and scored four runs to lead the Bulldogs to a 14-5 victory. A bases loaded walk, a wild pitch, and a throwing error after the wild pitch gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the second game. Anderson cut the Bulldog lead to 4-1 in the sixth when Donavon Schmidt scored on an infield error. The Trojans loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh but scored just one run. In the first game, Barton jumped out to a 6-1 lead through two innings and put the game away with five runs in the seventh. The Bulldogs hit two home runs in the first game -- Tyler Petty hit a two-run homer in the second and Goodwin hit a solo shot in the sixth. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday. If Mount Olive completed a sweep of Pfeiffer late Saturday night, Anderson can claim the eighth and last tournament spot if it beats Barton and Mount Olive beats Pfeiffer Sunday.
