AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Anderson College broke open a tie game with three runs in the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon and went on to a 5-3 victory over Augusta State in a non-conference game at Jaguar Field. Juniors Dustin Rucker and Garrick McGrath each banged out three hits and senior catcher Sam Barth added a pair of safeties as the Diamond Jags outhit Anderson, 11-7. Caleb Owen and Seth Thompson had a pair of hits each for the Trojans. Anderson (20-28) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Thompson's double to right-center and Owens' RBI-single. The Jags pulled even at 1 in the fifth on a McGrath single, a walk by Barth, and a Chris Demons' run-scoring double to left. The Trojans moved in front 2-1 in the sixth on Cody Nye's RBI-double to left. ASU (24-19-1) knotted the game at 2 in the bottom half of the inning on singles from Bennett Mayfield and Rucker and an RBI single to left by freshman designated hitter Jeremy Armstrong. Anderson took the lead for good in the seventh off of ASU senior reliever Steven Spragg. The Trojans combined a pair of hits, an error, and a fielder's choice into three runs, with a pair of runs scoring on F.A. Vildosola's grounder to second. AC reliever Gib Bethea earned the win in relief with an inning of work. Starter Aaron Griffith pitched the first six innings for the Trojans, scattering eight hits while allowing two runs with a strikeout and a walk. Brett Youngblood and Will Cheatham each tossed an inning of relief, giving up a hit each. ASU starter Preston Crews worked the first three innings and surrendered three hits and a run. Junior reliever David Beumel worked three innings of relief, allowing a hit and a run. Spragg worked the final three frames for the Jags and was charged with three hits and three runs -- two earned -- with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. Anderson's next action is Saturday and Sunday at Barton for a key three-game CVAC series.
