Southern Wesleyan Rally Nips Anderson

CENTRAL, S.C. -- Michael Land singled in the bottom of the ninth to cap a three-run rally and give Southern Wesleyan an 8-7 victory over Anderson College in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon. Anderson, 16-25 overall, took a 7-5 lead in the top of the ninth on a two-run homer by Jonathan Pitts. But the Warriors rallied in the home half of the ninth against Anderson reliever Gib Bethea. Brent Wiley and Jeff Vitaris both singled to lead off the inning to put runners at second and third. After a ground out scored Wiley and a walk, Jerry Kelly singled to tie the game at 7. After another walk loaded the bases, Land delivered to bring home the game winner. The Trojans scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. Donavon Schmidt reached on an error, Cody Nye tripled, and Nye scored on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Smith. Anderson took a 2-0 lead in the second on singles by Schmidt, Clint Neville, Nye, and Jeremy McCauley. Nye was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Pitts was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. Kelly led the Warriors' 14-hit attack with three hits. Wiley, Vitaris, Davey Blackburn, and Land had two hits apiece for the Warriors. The loss was Anderson's fifth this season in the bottom of the ninth. All five of those losses have come on the road. Anderson College Baseball Season Statistics
