Lady Trojans Blast Lees-McRae In First Round

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Mikala Fogle-Wilson scored 27 points and Nikki Anthony added 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead top-seeded Anderson University to an 81-59 victory over eighth-seeded Lees-McRae in the first round of the 2008 Conference Carolinas Tournament Monday night at the Abney Center. Anderson, 26-2 overall, ran its winning streak to 19 games. The loss ends Lees-McRae's season at 8-20. Anderson, ranked No. 14 in the Division II national poll, advances to face Belmont Abbey, a 53-46 winner over Limestone, at the Abney Center Thursday at 7 p.m. Anderson had a 20-point lead 14 minutes into the game and built its lead to as much as 31 in the second half. "We got off to a really good start, particularly on the defensive end," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "Two of our goals were to keep them off the free throw line and keep them off the offensive glass. They shot just six free throws and had just five offensive rebounds. It's almost impossible to hold the other team to just five offensive rebounds." Fogle-Wilson, a senior from Columbia, S.C., was 9-for-16 from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. She also had four assists and five steals. Anthony, a senior from Pickens, S.C., recorded her 15th double-double of the season and her fifth in the last six games. Anthony was 7-for-9 from the field and also handed out three assists. Keana Boyd joined Fogle-Wilson and Anthony in double figures with 10 points. Boyd needs just two more points to become the third Anderson player this season to reach 1,000 career points. Lees-McRae was led Courtney Furr with 18 points and Stephanie Mullinax with 15 points. In the first half, Anderson's full-court pressure forced 14 turnovers that led to 14 points. The Lady Trojans had just four turnovers in the first half and 11 for the game. Eleven is Anderson's second-lowest total of the season. The Lady Trojans committed just nine turnovers at North Greenville on Nov. 17. "That was one of the best halves we've had since I've been here in terms of taking care of the ball," Dow said. "We did a good job of sharing the ball." The Lady Trojans had 22 assists on 30 made baskets. Latrice Thomas led Anderson with seven assists. Lees-McRae shot 46 percent from the field, 52 percent in the second half, while Anderson shot 43 percent. "You have to give (Lees-McRae) Coach (Sebastian) Wild and his coaches a lot of credit," Dow said. "They kept playing hard the entire game. They never quit." Anderson was 6-for-11 from behind the arc in the first half. Fogle-Wilson was 3-for-3 from long range in the first half. "It was really a solid effort," Dow said. "There's not a whole lot to complain about. Being up 21 at the half showed me we were focused and ready to play. Most of the games we've been able to establish a lead we've been able to maintain it." Anderson swept Belmont Abbey during the regular season -- 71-56 at home on Jan. 14 and 71-54 at Belmont Abbey on Feb. 13. "Belmont Abbey is a very solid team with good guard play," Dow said. "It's March. It's all about surviving and advancing." Box: Anderson 81, Lees-McRae 59 Anderson University Women's Basketball Statistics
