Lady Trojans Survive Upset Bid by Royals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Nikki Anthony scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the No. 16 Anderson University Trojans pulled out a 64-63 win over Queens University of Charlotte at the Grady Cole Center Saturday night. After trailing by as many as 19 points, the Royals battled back. The upset bid fell short when Queens' Shakendra Hicks missed a long 3-point shot at the buzzer. The Royals (7-16 overall, 7-9 conference) battled Anderson (22-2 overall; 16-1 conference) close for most of the first half. The Trojans opened an 11-point lead and extended the lead to 13 points -- 39-26 -- before the break. The Trojans opened the second half with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 19, Anderson's largest lead of the game. Queens slowly chipped away at the deficit and came within eight with 12:35 left on the clock. Anthony and Keana Boyd sank three free throws to put the Trojans on top 63-60, but Kayla Babson's three tied the game up again at 63. Anthony was fouled and made one free throw for a one-point advantage. Queens got an defensive rebound and called a time out with one second to go. Hicks threw up a long 3-point shot that was on just off target, hitting the rim and bouncing away at the buzzer. The Trojans, who have won 15 straight, were led by Anthony with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Hicks led the Queens attack with 22 points and seven rebounds. Cecilia Tchangoue had five steals in the contest. The Royals bench out-scored the Trojan bench 25-5. Queens' defense limited the Trojan offense to 32.1 percent from the floor while the Royals shot 40.0 percent. Box: Anderson 64, Queens (N.C.) 63 Anderson University Women's Basketball Statistics
