BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Anderson's Zach Hart claimed third in the javelin throw with a distance of 49.96m, while AU's Will Byars took third with a distance of 39.07m in the hammer throw on the first day of competition at the Conference Carolinas Track and Field Meet at the Arthur, Laurentsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex on the campus of Lees-McRae College. Queens University of Charlotte's Michael Crouch ran a NCAA Provisional time of 31:06.45 in the men's 10,000m run to win his second consecutive Conference Carolinas Championship. Crouch, who ran a 29:55.75 in 2009 to earn the title, became the first Conference Carolinas athlete in both the men's and women's track and field championship to repeat in an event. It is also his second NCAA provisional mark in as many years at the conference meet. Rounding out the top three in the men's 10,000m was Futsum Mebrahtu of Queens, and Craig Simpkins of Lees-McRae. In first event of the day, the men's javelin, Limestone's Scott DiCrescenzo pulled out the most thrilling victory of the day with his distance of 50.22m in his final throw to edge out by four centimeters Lees-McRae's Jesse Hoots, who had a distance of 50.18m. In the men's high jump, Sam Youse took First Team All-Conference with his first place finish in the high jump. Both Youse and second place finisher, Charles Phillips had a height of six feet. Domonique Hollins finished third with a height of 5'10". In the final men's event of the day, Lees-McRae's Joe Daher repeated as conference champion in the hammer throw and set a new meet record with a distance of 41.18 breaking his distance from by three meters. Mount Olive's Joe Murphy finished second with a distance of 40.80 meters. Athletes who finished first earned First Team All-Conference and second place finishers earned Second Team All-Conference. After day one's results, Lees-McRae holds a 16-point lead over second place Limestone, who has 20 points, in the team competition. St. Andrews sits in third with 19 points, followed Queens with 18 points, Mount Olive with 17 points and Anderson with 14 points.
