ANDERSON, S.C. - The 10th-ranked Anderson men's soccer team wrapped up its brief two-match homestand by taking advantage of a second-half scoring outburst and a stout defense to outpace South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
With the temperatures in the 50s and a gusting wind that significantly altered passes and long-range shot attempts, Anderson (12-2, 7-0 SAC) ran its school-record win streak to 10 and is 14-1 at home since opening play at Trojan Stadium last season.
Newberry fell to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in the league, while suffering its fifth consecutive setback.
A trio of Trojans fired a flurry of shots in a 30-second span less than eight minutes into the contest, but each attempt was either wide or blocked by the Wolves' defense.
Sohrweide's second-career hat trick began in the 17th minute after teammate Shu Ogawa tapped the ball to Shorweide, who found the back of the net for his 12th score of the 2011 campaign.
The two squads went to intermission with AU holding the goal advantage and less than 10 minutes into the second half Sohrweide corralled Ryan Messick's free kick from nearly the same distance as the first goal and recorded his second score of the contest, putting AU ahead 2-0.
The Trojans bid for their seventh shutout of the season went by the wayside when Newberry's Kofi Kufuor slipped a shot just inside the right post at 57:09 to pull the Wolves within a goal, but Sohrweide answered in the 63rd minute by putting the ball in the net from point-blank range after taking a cross from teammate Mark Smith.
AU senior James Moseley put the game out of reach in the 76th minute with his fifth goal of the season off an assist from Sohweide.
Junior net-minder Lukas Hesse garnered one save on the afternoon en route to earning the win, with Anderson outshooting the Wolves, 19-4, and holding a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Anderson opens a two-match road swing at second-place Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, with kick-off slated for 4 p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
