Men's Soccer Team Drops Opener At Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. -- The Wingate University men's soccer team opened its 2003 season by defeating Anderson College 6-2 on Friday evening in day one of the Wingate University Soccer Classic. Sophomore forwards Robert Dawson (Manchester, England) and Steven Walsh (Cork, Ireland) scored two goals each for the Bulldogs. Wingate freshman defender Nick Malham (St. Albans, England) and freshman midfielder Dustin Moya (Thornton, Colo.) added one goal each. Walsh opened the scoring at the 4:57 mark on assists from Dawson and sophomore midfielder Travis Myernick (Thornton, Colo.). Anderson junior forward Blake Wood answered with the first of his two goals at the 17:28 plateau to tie the score. Moya and Walsh gave Wingate two additional goals in the first half to put them up 3-1 at halftime. The big fireworks in second half belonged to Dawson. The 2002 South Atlantic Conference "Freshman of the Year," Dawson tallied twice within a three-minute span to put Wingate up 5-1. Malham's marker at 61:47 was Wingate's final tally. Wood added another goal in the 75th minute to finish the scoring. The Bulldogs outshot the Trojans 26-5. Wingate senior goalkeeper Philip Poole (Newcastle, England) had one save, while Anderson sophomore keeper Jason Brown recorded ten saves. Wingate will play Coker College Saturday at 4 p.m. Anderson will face Lenoir-Rhyne College at 2 p.m. Coker and Lenoir-Rhyne tied 2-2 in Friday's late match. -- Release courtesy of Wingate Sports Information Office
