THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Queens University of Charlotte has been picked to repeat in the CVAC men's preseason soccer poll voted on by the league's head coaches. The Royals have won three of the last four regular-season championships -- 1999, 2000, and 2002 -- and won the CVAC Tournament championship in 2001. Last year marked the first undefeated regular season (14-0-2, 16-2-2 overall) for Queens, which earned a berth to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Under the direction of current CVAC & Southeast Region Coach of the Year Fred Norchi, this year's squad will rely on the solid mix of talent and leadership on and off the field. Sophomore Demetrius Donald (2nd Team All-CVAC) and junior Simon Wulliman have the speed in the forward line to break through opposing defenses. Returning as a midfield threat is junior Oliver Carias (2nd Team All-CVAC) who during last year's run was No. 3 in assists in NCAA DII. Senior Travis French and sophomore Michael Hensen will make up the core of the backfield defensively for the Royals. Lees-McRae enters this year's campaign as the reigning CVAC Tournament Champions with a 17-4 (9-2-0 CVAC) record but with a very different team. Ninety-five percent of the goal scorers from the 2002 team having departed. Top returnees for the Bobcats include goalkeeper Calvin Dixon (2nd Team All-CVAC), defenders Chris McIntosh, Luke Patterson, and Jeff Tate. The front line will be young, but talented players have been added to the roster. Top newcomers include Adam Howell, from Charlotte, NC, George Burlacu, Orlando, FL, and Nick Velasquez, Weston, FL who will add fire power upfront for the Bobcats. Scottish National team player John McLelland will provide added experience along the back line, and Shawn Berting, and Tim Bender should also see a lot of playing time in the midfield for LMC. Overall, the Bobcats have added 13 new players to a championship winning team including 13 returning players from 2002. Belmont Abbey College places third in the poll as new head coach Charles Morrow will have seven starters returning, which includes the entire defense from last year's squad which went 12-7-2 and finished second in the CVAC (9-1-1). Highlighting the returnees are seniors B.J. O'Brein (1st Team All-CVAC) Greg Gojanovich & Paul Wilander on defense, and Jeff Strebler & Adam Kremer offensively. Barton finished fourth in the poll, as Anderson & Limestone tied for fifth. Rounding out the poll 7-11 was: Mt. Olive, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews, Coker, and Erskine respectively.
