Lady Trojans Survive Mount Olive Upset Bid

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Decole Shoemate made two free throws with four seconds remaining and Anderson College forced 39 turnovers as the Lady Trojans beat Mount Olive 95-92 in overtime in a CVAC game Friday night at College Hall. Anderson, 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the CVAC, has won eight straight. Mount Olive falls to 7-9, 3-6. Mount Olive shot 60 percent in the first half to build a 50-39 halftime lead. The homestanding Trojans led until the 3:20 mark of the second half when Stephanie Ponds scored to give AC an 84-83 lead, its first lead since midway through the first half. A basket by AC's Deidra Langston tied the game at 81 with 27 seconds remaining in regulation. In the overtime period, a layup by Ponds gave AC a 92-90 lead with 27 seconds remaining. After Mount Olive tied the game, Segers made one of two free throws with 18 seconds left to put the Lady Trojans ahead 93-92. After a Mount Olive miss, Shoemate went to the free throw line and made two to give the Lady Trojans a three-point margin. Anderson, ranked seventh in the Jan. 25 East Region poll, placed six players in double figures. LaShonda Chiles led the way with 20 points. She was followed by Langston with 17, Segers with 15, Deanna Thompson with 13, Ponds with 12, and Shemika Reed with 11. Ponds was AC's leading rebounder with eight. Chiles also had five assists, and Langston and Thompson had four steals apiece for AC. Mount Olive's Latroia Harvey led all scorers with 23 points. AC scored 39 points off Mount Olive's turnovers.
