Men's Tennis Falls to Lees-McRae

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The 24th-ranked Anderson men's tennis team wrapped up its brief two-match homestand by suffering its first league setback this season, 7-2, to No. 30 Lees-McRae Tuesday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Tennis Courts. Lees-McRae (9-4, 6-0 Conference Carolinas), ranked ninth in the Southeast Region, grabbed the early advantage by taking two of three doubles' matches and claimed sole possession of first place in the conference standings, winning its fourth consecutive match. The Bobcats' tandem of Steve Karendal and Travis VanHoy def. Renato Assuncao and Ilya Zakharov, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot, but AU's Stan Atema and John Karle edged Lees-McRae's Nandor Solymosi and Tyler Grove, 9-8 (7-4), at the No. 2 flight, while LMC's Shaun Sumner and Marko Zivkovic slipped past the Trojans' Daniel Gonzalez and Stephane Murray, 9-7, at No. 3. Anderson (8-6, 5-1 Conference Carolinas), ranked 10th in the Southeast Region, got a straight-set win on the singles' side from senior Renato Assuncao as he defeated Travis VanHoy, 7-5, 6-1.
