Men's Tennis Falls to Auburn-Montgomery

CLEMSON, S.C. -- In a battle between two of the nation's top-ranked teams, the 24th ranked Anderson men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Auburn University-Montgomery, one of the top NAIA teams in the nation, Friday afternoon at Clemson's Hoke A. Sloan Tennis Center. Anderson dropped its third consecutive match and slipped to 7-5 on the season, while Auburn-Montgomery stayed undefeated, improving to 16-0. The Senators, showing why they were the 2009 NAIA National Tournament Runners-Up and boasting three of the nation's top 25 players, swept the closely-contested doubles points. The singles' action saw AUM's top-ranked Alberto Romeo defeat senior Renato Assuncao, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 1 flight, while 12th ranked Sadio Doumbia downed Anderson's Ilya Zakharov in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. At No. 3, nationally fourth-ranked Michael Johnson blanked Stan Atema 6-0, 6-0 and AU's John Karle collected the Trojan's lone win of the afternoon by defeating 23rd ranked Saad Benkirane, 6-3 in the opening set and was tied 4-4 with Benkirane in the second set when the AUM freshman retired. The Senators' Bence Toth got past Anderson's Deni Mehagic, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Julian Kurz defeated Loic Ambroise, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
