Tennis Teams Fall at Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- The 24th ranked Anderson men's tennis team continued its three-match non-conference road trip by suffering a 7-2 setback to No. 14 Lander University, while the women's team dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to the Lady Bearcats Tuesday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Courts. The Bearcats won their 10th consecutive match and improved to 10-1 overall, while Anderson slipped to 7-4 overall and the AU women's squad dropped to 7-6 on the season. Lander swept the doubles' points, while the singles' action opened with Trojan senior Renato Assuncao defeating the Bearcats' Paul-Henri Arrigoni, 2-6, 6-4, (10-7) at the No. 1 slot, while John Karle also rallied for a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5 (10-7) win at the number four flight for the AU wins. In doubles' action on the women's side, the sophomore tandem of Marcela Gallegos and Shelby Anderson claimed their second win in as many days with a solid 8-2 win at No. 1, while Julie Halbert and Camie Beaulieu-Brunet dropped a close 9-8 decision at the number two flight, with Emily Weiland and Angie Solorzano suffering an 8-6 setback at No. 3. Solorzano followed up with a three-set 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Brunet earned a 6-1, 6-2 win past Lander's Caitlin Fell. Weiland collected the Trojan's final win of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Melanise Newbold. The AU men's team travels to Francis Marion on Wednesday before taking a seven-day break from the courts, while the women's squad returns to action when it plays host to conference opponent Coker at the Max Grubbs Courts on Saturday, March 27, with first-serve slated for 1 p.m.
