CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Anderson men's tennis team used a sweep on the singles side to claim their season-opener in convincing fashion, 7-2, past Queens University Friday afternoon at the Ovens Athletic Center. Anderson (1-0, 1-0 Conference Carolinas), dropped two doubles points, but earned wins in all six singles matches to open its 2010 campaign on a positive note, while Queens fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas play. The Anderson sophomore doubles tandem of Stephane Murray and Stan Atema defeated Joshua Block and Gustavo Munhoz, 8-2, at No.1 to give the Trojans their first win and the Trojans went on to follow up by sweeping the singles' action. Murray picked up his second win of the afternoon with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Queens' Joshua Block at No. 1, while senior Renato Assuncao downed Raahil Dhruva, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. At the No. 3 slot, Atema picked up a solid 6-0, 6-3 win past Gustavo Munhoz and freshman Deni Mehagic rolled past Queens' Alex McKinzie, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Sophomore Ilya Zakharov recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Patricio Calderon and freshman John Karle defeated Bryce Boothby, 6-4, 7-5, to round out the action. Anderson has little time to rest, as the Trojans play host to South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill in AU's home-opener Saturday, with first-serve slated for Noon on the Anderson campus.
