Trojans Drop Season Opener On The Road

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Debola Ogunseye recorded his third career hat trick to lead Newberry College to a 6-2 victory in its season opener over the Anderson University Thursday afternoon. The six goals scored were the most scored by the Indians since they won 6-2 over Pfeiffer University on October 6, 2004. Newberry jumped to an early lead when Ogunseye slid through the defense and found Seth Addison for a goal in just the seventh minute of action. Ogunseye followed up the first goal with one of his own just six minutes later when junior Jeff Bell lofted a long pass over the defense which Ogunseye took and arched over the keeper to record his first goal of the season. Though they didn't score again in the first half, the Indians continued to apply the pressure, outshooting the Trojans 10-5 before heading into halftime with a 2-0 lead. Newberry continued its scoring 12 minutes into the second half when Ogunseye took the rebound from a Jarvis Snyder shot and shot it through the left side for his second goal. Snyder earned a penalty kick in the 62nd minute and scored to the keeper's right to give Newberry a 4-0 lead. Newberry seemed to have the game in hand, but two quick headers for goals by the Trojans drew Anderson to within two with 10 minutes to play. Peter Miele assisted on both goals, serving the first to Lahndon Onger after a turnover deep in Newberry territory, and the second to Rayon Markland off a corner kick. But just two minutes later, Ogunseye took a pass up the left side from redshirt freshman Marvin Torvic and beat the keeper to the right for his third goal of the game. The final goal was scored after Addison made a run from midfield with ten seconds left. With 1.5 seconds remaining, Miele took Addison down inside the penalty area, earning a red card for himself and a penalty kick for Addison. Addison beat the goalie on his right side. Anderson's next action is Saturday at home against Brevard. The match will start at 7 p.m.
