BRISTOL, Tenn. – Led by sophomore Jake Miller and junior Grayson Bell's 3-over-par 73s, the Anderson men's golf team is in seventh place following first-round action of the King Invitational, which is being hosted by the Tornados at the par 70, 6,474 yard, Country Club of Bristol layout.
After finishing second at the AU Invitational a week ago, the Trojans trail Erskine, North Greenville, King, Southern Wesleyan, Belmont Abbey and King (B), while leading Pfeiffer, Catawba and Virginia-Wise.
Erskine holds a two-shot lead on North Greenville, while King and SWU are just three strokes off the pace set by the Flying Fleet.
North Greenville's Evan Gfeller and Erskine's Bernie McShane are tied atop the individual leaderboard after carding 2-under-par 68s and lead Belmont Abbey's Nick Stafford and Southern Wesleyan's Thomas Nielsen by just one shot heading into Tuesday's final round. Seven others are within striking distance, just three shots behind the leaders.
Miller and Bell each recorded season-low rounds and are deadlocked in an eight-way tie for 17th, with Cal Brock equaling his season-low score with an opening round 74. The freshman from Greenwood, S.C., is in a six-way tie for 25th.
Senior Forrest Fowler and sophomore Brady Cox each carded a 5-over-par 75 and share 31st place.
The second and final round is set for Tuesday.
