ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson senior Forrest Fowler fired a two-day 6-over-par 150 and finished in a tie for second place, but the Anderson men's golf team was unable overcome a three-stroke deficit and finished second at the AU Invitational, Tuesday at the 6,961 yard, par-72 Cobb's Glen Country Club layout.
AU began the day three shots behind the Hurricanes and with sophomore Brady Cox leading the charge by shaving six shots off Monday's opening-round 83, the Trojans came up just shy of erasing Georgia Southwestern's lead.
The Hurricanes held on for a one-shot victory, while Bob Jones University remained in third, finishing five strokes behind the Trojans. Brevard jumped from sixth to fourth behind Craig Stephen's individual winning effort. Erskine remained in fifth place, while Spartanburg Methodist claimed sixth and Emmanuel was seventh.
Brevard's Stephens began the day alone in sixth place, three shots off the pace set by Georgia Southwestern's Elias Birkeland and Bob Jones' Drew Buffaloe. But the senior from Scotland trimmed six strokes from the first round and won individual medalist honors by four shots over Fowler, Buffaloe and GSW's Nix Duncan.
Fowler finished in the three-way tie for second, while freshman Cal Brock finished fifth after a two-round 151. Fellow freshman Colt Martin (78-76=154) jumped from sharing 10th place into a tie for eighth, with sophomore Jake Miller (79-76=155) moving into a four-way tie for 10th after trimming three shots off his first-round effort.
Juniors Grayson Bell (78-77=155) and Cole Jefferys (77-78=155) were among those deadlocked in 10th place, while Cox finished in a tie for 24th. Junior David Monroe slashed eighth strokes from Monday's first round and tied for 30th following a two-round 166. Sophomore Drake McAlister carded a two-day 172 and finished in 38th place.
The Trojans will get back on the links Monday at King University's Invitational in Bristol, Tenn.
