MORGANTON, N.C. – Led by sophomore Brady Cox's 3-over-par-73, the Anderson men's golf team is tied for 10th place following opening-round action Monday at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate.
The 36-hole event is being hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne at the 6,718 yard, par-70 Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
The host Bears and Newberry and are tied atop the team leaderboard and lead Coker by two strokes, with Belmont Abbey alone in fourth place. North Greenville and Milligan College share the fifth spot, two strokes behind the Crusaders. Barton, Emmanuel, Erskine, AU, Catawba, Felician and Chowan round out the 13-team field.
North Greenville's Evan Gfeller and Newberry's Harry Bolton lead the chase for individual medalist honors after firing identical 1-under-par 69s on the day. Four others are just one shot behind the duo, with an additional six golfers within two shots of the leaders.
Cox is in the midst of an eight-way tie for 23rd, while sophomore Jake Miller fired a 6-over-par-76 and shares 42nd place. Competing as an individual, sophomore Drake McAlister is also tied for 42nd after a first-round 76. Senior Forrest Fowler carded a 7-over-par 77 and sits in a tie for 49th heading into Tuesday's second round.
The freshman duo of Colt Martin (79) and Cal Brock (81) are tied for 62nd and 72nd, respectively.
The final round is set for Tuesday.
