Men’s Golf in Ninth after Partial Opening Day of SAC Championship

SALISBURY, N.C. – While battling the weather for a good portion of the opening round and with four groups slated to complete their first round on Monday morning, the Anderson University men's golf team is currently in ninth place following action at the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship, which is being hosted by Catawba at the par-71 6,685 yard Country Club of Salisbury layout.

With three players yet to complete the first round, Carson-Newman is at even-par and leads the 12-team field heading into the second day. Four of Newberry's golfers have yet to complete the first round, with the Wolves currently at 4-over-par and tied alongside Queens in the second spot. Coker is two shots further back in fourth place, while Lincoln Memorial, the defending champion, is in fifth place.

Brevard and Tusculum, which won its first championship two years ago, are tied for sixth, with Wingate holding the eighth slot. AU is ninth, with Mars Hill in 10th. The host Indians are 11th and are looking for their fifth overall championship and first since sharing the 2000 title with Presbyterian. Lenoir-Rhyne rounds out the field in 12th place.

Tusculum's Cameron Duggar and Queens' Gilberto Pena are tied atop the leaderboard after carding first-round 69s Sunday. Six others are one shot further back.

Senior Payton Whitlock paced the Trojans with an opening-round, 3-over-par 74 that included three birdies and sits in 19th place. Sophomore David Monroe is one shot further back in 25th place after firing a first-round 75, while classmate
Grayson Bell notched a 76 and is in 29th place.

Freshman Jake Miller carded a 6-over-par 77 on Sunday and is in 35th place, with graduate student Weston Bell posting four birdies on the day and is in 42nd place after firing a 78.

The four groups that need to complete the first round will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, with the second round of the three-day event scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
