ANDERSON, S.C. – With three players posting top-10 scores, the Anderson University men's golf team is in fourth place after Monday's opening round of the AU Invitational, hosted by the Trojans at the par-72, 7,005-yard Cobb's Glen layout.
Catawba holds a seven-shot lead over Bob Jones University (302) after posting an opening-round 295 on Monday, with Southern Wesleyan holding onto third place after notching a 303. The Trojans (307) are four shots further back in fourth place and lead Belmont Abbey (B) by a pair of strokes.
Spartanburg Methodist (311), Belmont Abbey (C) (313), Mars Hill (314), Erskine (318) and Emmanuel (320) round out the 10-team field heading into Tuesday's final round.
Catawba's Mac Shepphard was the lone player to break par, as the freshman from Harrisburg, N.C. fired a 4-under-par 68 on the strength of five birdies on the day. Mars Hill's Adam Lumley and Belmont Abbey's Jacob Scruggs are each four shots off the pace after carding even-par 72s, with three additional players within five shots of the lead.
Sophomore David Monroe, who carded five birdies, paced the Trojan effort with a 1-over-par 73 and is in a three-way tie for fourth. Sophomore Grayson Bell also posted five birdies on the day and freshman Jake Miller led the field with 15 pars, as both players posted opening-round 75s and are tied for 10th place.
AU's Weston Bell and senior Payton Whitlock each shot identical 84s and share 41st place, with Drake McAlister notching a first-round 85 and is tied for 43rd.
