Weston Bell Wins State Farm Intercollegiate; Trojans Move up to Fifth Overall

TAZEWELL, Tenn. – Anderson's Weston Bell overcame a two-shot deficit following Monday's second round to win the State Farm Intercollegiate by two shots Tuesday at the par-72, 6,746 yard Woodlake Golf Club course.

The men's golf team concluded its fall schedule by moving up one spot to claim fifth overall at the 54-hole, two-day event. The 15-team field played 36 holes on Monday and wrapped up the two-day event with 18 holes on Tuesday.

The host Railsplitters led wire-to-wire and claimed a 16-shot victory over runner-up Carson-Newman, which overtook Lenoir-Rhyne on the final day. Brevard held on to the fourth spot, with the Trojans breaking a three-way logjam in the sixth slot following Monday's action to take fifth place by one stroke over Lincoln Memorial (Blue) and Barton.

Walters State Community College slipped two spots to eighth, with Coker leaping from 12th to ninth. Southern Wesleyan fell from fifth to 10th, while Catawba and Tusculum finished 11th and 12th, respectively. Mars Hill, Brevard (B) and Lincoln Memorial (Gray) rounded out the field.

Bell, who was coming off a ninth-place finish at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate a week ago, began the day in a four-way tie for fourth, two shots off the pace set by Mars Hill's Adam Lumley and trailing LMU's Brandon Gibson and Carson-Newman's Jake Headrick by one shot.

Bell equaled his season-low effort with a 2-under-par 70 in Monday's second round, then bettered it with a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to eclipse LMU's George Duncan and Lenoir-Rhyne's Brad Robinson by two shots to claim individual medalist honors. Lumley fired a 2-over-par 74 and slid into a tie for fourth, with Gibson and Headrick each slipping into a five-way deadlock for sixth with 74s on the final day. Bell carded a dozen birdies and reached par on 38 holes en route to the Trojan's first individual title since Chase Epting claimed the Tri-County Shootout during the 2011-12 campaign.

Sophomore David Monroe bounced back from a tough opening round and freshman Jake Miller was consistent over all three rounds, with the duo sharing 43rd place. Junior Forrest Fowler slipped from a tie for 23rd into a share of 47th, while sophomore Grayson Bell finished in 57th place.
