ANDERSON, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey took advantage of five Anderson University errors to beat the Trojans 11-8 and complete a sweep of a three-game CVAC series Monday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. The Crusaders scored seven unearned runs. In the seventh inning with two outs and down 8-7, Belmont Abbey's Alex Castellanos reached on an error and Josh Haire followed with a single. Nick Popp then blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence that proved to be the game winner. The lost drops the Trojans to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the CVAC, while the Crusaders improve to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the CVAC. The Crusaders got on the scoreboard first when Patrick Atwell walked and later scored on an RBI single by Alex Udwari in the first inning. In the second inning, the Crusaders scored two runs a two walks, a error, and an RBI single by Atwell to make it 3-0. The Trojans answered in the bottom of the second when Kyle Lewis started the inning off with a single and later scored on single to center by Josh Harrison. Tony Graham reached on a fielder's choice and B.J. Smith walked to load the bases with two outs for Jessie Whiteside. Whiteside hit a one hopper of the fence to clear the bases and to give the Trojans a 5-3 lead. The Trojans scored one more in the fourth and two in the fifth to make the score 8-3, but then the Crusaders started rallying. They answered with four unearned runs in the sixth inning on two errors and two hits. The key hit a two-run single by Tyler McKenzie. Brett Dipasquale picked up the win for the Crusaders by working four innings. Three of his four innings he held the Trojans scoreless. Cory Welch was saddled with the loss after giving up four runs, one earned, in 1 1/3 innings. The Trojans were led offensively by Whiteside, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and by Lewis, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
