SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- USC Upstate junior designated hitter Kyle Bowley was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and his first home run of the season to lead the 21st-ranked Spartans to their ninth consecutive home win dating back to last season in a 10-4 victory over the Anderson Trojans Wednesday afternoon at Harley Park. Upstate improves its mark to 10-3 this season, and Anderson falls to 7-9. In the first inning, the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead when Bowley scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore second baseman Eric Guillen. The Trojans answered in the second inning with a three-run home run to right field from second baseman B.J. Smith to take the lead at 3-1. After Anderson first baseman John Mac White hit a home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning to increase the AU lead to 4-1, Upstate scored in bottom half when Bowley slammed a solo home run of his own to left field to cut the lead to 4-2. The Spartans retook the lead for good in the fifth inning with six runs including two-RBI doubles from Bowley and senior center fielder Bret Hansen for an 8-4 lead. Upstate would add two more runs in the sixth inning on a Bowley sacrifice fly and a RBI single by junior right fielder Casey Rivers. Hansen was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored and Rivers finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman catcher Jimmy Tanner was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Smith finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored to lead Anderson and Mac White was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored. Upstate freshman starting pitcher Matt Branham (2-0) picked up the win pitching five innings allowing four earned runs on six hits. The Spartans bullpen pitched four innings allowing just one hit and one walk. Trojans pitcher Kaleb Davis (1-1) took the loss, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
