Heckel, Hanson, Respress, and Carpenter Named Jimmy John's Athletes of the Week

ANDERSON, S.C. – Joey Heckel of the Anderson University men's lacrosse team, Whitney Hanson and Simeon Respress of track and field, and Maddie Carpenter of the softball team were named the Jimmy John's Athletes of the Week.

Heckel, a redshirt freshman from Easton, PA, helped lead the Trojans to an upset win over nationally ranked Wingate on Saturday (Mar. 19) by recording 22 saves. In the loss against Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday (Mar. 16), Heckel recorded 16 saves, totaling a 59.4 save percentage for both games.

Hanson, a junior from Colstrip, Montana, won the 800m (2:17.71) and the 1500m (4:41.27) at the Trojan Opener this last weekend. The meet was the first ever outdoor track and field held at Anderson University.

Respress, a freshman from Cornella, Georgia, set a new Anderson school record at the Trojan Opener in the long jump with a distance of 6.87m. Along with Whitney Hanson, they were both named players to watch for the upcoming outdoor season by the SAC.

A freshman utility player, Carpenter was an instrumental part in helping the Trojans to a 3-1 record this past weekend. Overall, the Hickory, N.C., native averaged a .438 batting average, going 7-for-16 from the plate with a .875 slugging percentage, four RBI's, five runs scored, two home runs and a double. This is Carpenter's first Player of the Week honor of the season.

Each week, male and female student-athletes are honored as the Jimmy John's Athletes of the Week for their performance in competition, in the classroom, or in the community.
