ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team will close its regular season by playing host to Coker in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. First-pitch in the Electric City is set for 1 p.m.
The Trojans
With a twin bill slated for later Friday afternoon, Anderson
(31-11, 12-6 SAC) stands in second place in the South Atlantic
Conference, while Carson-Newman clinched the top seed in next
week's league tournament. If AU sweeps both Brevard on Friday
afternoon and Coker on Saturday, and the Eagles stumble twice at
Queens on Sunday afternoon, the Trojans would share the
regular-season title with C-N. However, the Eagles would still own
the tourney's top seed by virtue of their sweep of the
Trojans.
With four games remaining on the schedule for most of the teams in the conference, only three games separate second place from the eighth spot in the standings. The Trojans are one game ahead of preseason league favorite Wingate, and stand two games ahead of both Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba.
Entering Friday's twin bill versus the Tornados, Anderson has won four of its last six games and has won 16 of its 18 games at Smethers Field this season.
The Trojans will bid farewell to three seniors - third baseman Bri Cason, second baseman Jessica Neidigh and left-fielder Rebecca Martin in Saturday's Senior Day festivities.
In addition to holding numerous school records and ranking among the school's career statistical leaders, the senior trio has helped lead the Trojans to 152 wins during their careers, including setting three straight school records for wins in a season. Over the last three years, AU has won both the South Atlantic Conference regular-season championship, the SAC Tournament title and finished as tournament runners-up once. The Trojans have made two straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including the 2013 Super Regional in Savannah, Ga.
The Cobras
Coker (23-22, 9-9 SAC) was a preseason pick to finish 11th in the
South Atlantic Conference in a poll of the league's coaches after
finishing 12th last season with a record of 5-17 within the
conference and a 16-27 overall mark.
Senior infielder Ashlee Ellen was a Preseason Second-Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection, after playing in 40 games and posting a .259 batting average a year ago. She recorded 30 hits, 18 runs and 24 RBI, while belting four home runs. In the field she had a team-leading 226 put outs, with 11 assists.
Coker is 14-9 away from home on the season and has dropped two of its last three outings, while splitting doubleheaders with Newberry and Mars Hill.
The Series vs. Coker
The Trojans and Cobras have met 37 times on the diamond, with all
but two of the meetings occurring as South Atlantic Conference
rivals. Coker holds a decisive 24-13 advantage in the overall
series, but Anderson has won four straight and nine of the last 11
matchups, including sweeps of the 2012 and 2014 regular-season
doubleheaders. As SAC rivals, the Trojans are 2-0 versus the
Cobras, with the 2013 regular-season twin bill getting washed
out.
Anderson and Coker met four times as non-conference opponents in
2011 and 2012, with AU taking three-of-four decisions. The
Conference Carolinas' rivalry (1998-2010) saw the Cobras claim the
first 13 meetings between the two schools and hold a 23-8 edge over
the 13-year span.
