Anderson Earns Split With Barton

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Kayla Williams drove in the tying run with a double and scored the winning run on a throwing error to give Anderson University a 6-5 victory over Barton College in 10 innings and a split of a CVAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Courtney Bunch hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and two Barton pitchers -- Kim Page and Jessica Mitchell -- limited Anderson to three hits to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory. After losing the first game, Anderson scored an unearned in the second inning and got an RBI single from Fallon Downs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Anderson extended its lead to 4-1 in the fifth on singles by Christina Hendricks and Ellen Steele and a two-run double by Williams. A solo home run by Emily Sale in the sixth cut the Anderson lead to 4-2. Barton tied the game at 4 in the top of the seventh. Mika Gurganus led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. After Jennifer Chambers walked and Christina Gurley popped out, Sale received a two-out walk to load the bases. Jennifer Mitchell then delivered a two-out single to tie the game. After both teams failed to take advantage of the international tie-breaking rule in the eighth and ninth, Barton finally broke through in the 10th when Mitchell singled with two outs to score Chambers. But Anderson quickly tied the game at 5 when Williams led of the bottom of the 10th with a double to center to score Maranda Sialmas from second and tie the game at 5. After a sacrifice and a pop out, Melissa Waters reached on an error to end the game. Anderson had 14 hits and left 19 runners on base in the second game. In the first game, Downs gave Anderson a 1-0 lead in the second with her first home run of the season. But Barton got a two-run homer from Bunch in the fifth and an RBI single by Gurley in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Page, the Barton starter, allowed just three hits and one run and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings before being lifted for Mitchell. Mitchell retired all five batters she faced and had three strikeouts. The victory in the second game snapped a five-game losing streak for Anderson, 18-25 overall and 10-6 in the CVAC. Barton is now 8-23, 2-12. 2006 Anderson University Softball Statistics
