Carson-Newman Takes Two From Softball Team

ANDERSON, S.C. - Hillary Howard hit a home run with two outs in the top of the seventh to give Carson-Newman a 5-4 victory over Anderson University in the second game and a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Kathryn Speaks and Mandy Stevens drove in two runs apiece and Megan Elliott and Jessica Armstrong scattered five Anderson hits to lead the Eagles to a 7-1 victory. Carson-Newman improves to 3-1, while Anderson falls to 5-5. The Eagles scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead in the first game. The big hits in the inning were a two-run double by Speaks and a two-run homer by Stevens. Carson-Newman added two more runs in the fourth on two errors, a walk, three stolen bases and a run-scoring single by Howard. Anderson broke up the shut out in the seventh on a leadoff double by Melissa Waters and three walks. The Eagles finished the first game with six hits, three by Stevens. Megan Elliott, who allowed Anderson just one hit in four innings in the first game also started the second game and got roughed up by the Lady Trojans. Anderson hit three home runs off Elliott in the first three innings - a solo shot by Allison Cromer to lead off the game, a two-run homer by Ellen Steele in the second, and a solo shot by Kayla Thrasher in the third. Trailing 3-2 in the top of the third, Carson-Newman scored two runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. After a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Megan Bates fisted a pop up just behind second base to bring home two runs. Anderson tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the third on Thrasher's second home run of the season. Anderson outhit Carson-Newman in the second game, 9-6.
