ANDERSON, S.C. - Tommy Hewitt has been named head softball coach at Anderson College, AC athletic director Bobby Beville announced Friday afternoon. "We are excited Tommy is joining our coaching staff at Anderson College," Beville said. "He is a veteran coach with an excellent work ethic. He knows and loves the game of softball. We believe he will take our softball program to the next level." Hewitt replaces Christine Yon Korver, who resigned in May after two seasons. Hewitt, a native of College Park, Ga., has spent the last eight years at Pendleton High School in Pendleton, S.C. At Pendleton High, he was the school-to-work coordinator, and he also coached several sports. He was an assistant coach in softball and football and was the head coach for girls' golf and junior varsity boys' and girls' soccer. "I've been working my entire life to get an opportunity like this," Hewitt said. "It's amazing. It really is. I appreciate the opportunity and the vote of confidence shown in me by the Anderson College athletic department and the Anderson College administration. I'm ready to get started. I want to hit the ground running." Hewitt has coached both AAU softball and baseball. In 2002 and '03, he led an Under 16 team from Pendleton to an overall record of 99-32 and seven tournament titles. The '02 team came in second at the ISA World in Covington, Ga., and the '03 team came in second at the USFA World in Panama City, Fla. "I want to take the Anderson softball program places where it hasn't been before - to conference championships and to regionals," Hewitt said. "We will be an aggressive team. We will take advantage of the mistakes of our opponents. We will do the little things you have to do to win games. If it's a one-run game, I want that one run to be on our side." Anderson, 22-38 overall in 2004, has recorded three consecutive winning seasons in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference. The Lady Trojans finished third in the CVAC in '03 and fourth in '04. Hewitt attended Clayton Junior College in Jonesboro, Ga., and Mercer University in Atlanta, where he received a B.S. degree in business administration. He served in the Army from '68 to '70 and did a tour of duty in Vietnam.
