Softball Team Splits Two Games, Eliminates Erskine

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Anderson College softball team split two games Saturday to stay alive in the 2005 CVAC Tournament at Byerly Park. In the first game, Anderson lost to top-seeded Coker, 2-1. Anderson scored in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Rachelle Lawrence. Coker answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on a walk, a single, then three straight walks. After the second run scored, Anderson starting pitcher Stephanie Griffis was replaced by Ashley Rogers, who allowed the Cobras just two hits the rest of the way. Anderson, 22-37 overall, had a chance to tie the game in the top of the sixth when Lawrence hit a deep drive with a runner aboard, but the ball was caught just short of the fence. In the second game, Anderson eliminated Erskine from the tournament, 6-2. Lawrence had a two-run single in the top of the first and a solo home run in the top of the fifth. Maranda Passmore and Carolyn Smith both had RBI singles in the top of the third, and Cindy Crosby had a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth. Rogers pitched the first three innings of the game, and Griffis took over in the top of the fourth. Anderson will play the winner of Saturday night's Limestone-Queens game in its first game Sunday.
